Fire alarms are consistent in almost every environment. While standardization is important to safety, I wanted to explore what value could be added to a fire alarm that is context sensitive. In this project I designed a fire alarm for a surgical suite.
After researching the specific needs of a surgical suite there were a few problems that the current system of fire alarms were not meeting. Typically a fire in a surgical suite is small and controlled and the surgeons take care of it without any external help. However, this is not ideal for hospital management for safety and reporting accuracy.
To solve this problem, I developed a fire alarm around the idea that the alarm is not just a trigger for a siren, but a communication system between the surgical suite and the hospital administration that can be used to request assistance in an emergency and to report more minor fires.
